  • Symbolizing the elimination of afflictions: Buddhism holds that human life is beset with 108 types of afflictions, known as “one hundred and eight afflictions” or “one hundred and eight knots,” as mentioned in Volume 7 of The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom. A string of 108 crystal beads symbolizes the elimination of these afflictions. Each time a bead is moved (while reciting mantras or prayers), it signifies the resolution of one affliction. Through continuous recitation and bead-moving, practitioners can gradually free themselves from the obsessions of greed, hatred, and delusion, and attain a pure state of mind.
  • Representing stages of spiritual practice: The 108 beads symbolize the 54 stages of a Bodhisattva’s spiritual cultivation, including the “Ten Faiths,” “Ten Abodes,” “Ten Practices,” “Ten Transferences of Merit,” “Ten Stages of Bodhisattvas,” as well as “Equal Enlightenment” and “Supreme Enlightenment.” Multiplying these 54 stages by the “Three Times” (past, present, and future) forms a complete practice system, representing the entire journey of a practitioner from the initial awakening of the Bodhi mind to the final attainment of Buddhahood.
  • Corresponding to the Six Sense Faculties, Three Types of Sensations, and Three Times: The Six Sense Faculties refer to the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind (consciousness), each of which experiences three types of sensations—suffering, pleasure, and neutrality—resulting in 18 types of afflictions. These 18 afflictions, when combined with the Three Times (past, present, and future), give rise to 54 afflictions. Multiplying this number by two (to account for karmic forces of good and evil) finally results in 108 afflictions. The 108 crystal beads thus correspond to these afflictions, reminding practitioners to transcend the constraints of sensory perceptions and time, and to sever all afflictions.
  • Relating to the laws of the universe: In Buddhism, the number 108 is regarded as a sacred number connected to the laws of the universe. For example, in yoga philosophy, the human body has 108 energy points (chakras and marma points); in astronomy, the diameter of the Sun is approximately 108 times that of the Earth, and the distance between the Moon and the Earth is roughly 108 times the diameter of the Earth. A string of 108 crystal beads represents the wholeness and perfection of the universe. By using it in practice, practitioners can align themselves with the energy and laws of the universe, achieving harmony between the body, mind, and the cosmos.
